Why is notarization required in India?
Because when you're signing documents outside India, the bank or broker has no practical way to verify your identity in person. Notarization provides an independent verification of who signed the document and helps institutions satisfy their compliance and KYC requirements before processing your request.
My bank in India is asking for attested copies. Who can attest them if I'm abroad?
The answer depends on your bank's requirements. Most Indian institutions accept attestation from one or more of the following: * A local Notary Public in your country of residence * Your overseas bank * The Indian Embassy or Consulate * Rupeeflo's fully digital notarization service
I work full-time and can't visit a consulate or Indian embassy. Can I get this done remotely?
Yes, you can. Via Rupeeflo, the entire process is digital and doesn’t demand more than 15 mins of your time.
Does online notarization count - will Indian banks or brokers accept it?
For NRI Demat account opening and KYC, digitally notarized documents are generally accepted and recognized under regulatory frameworks followed by Indian financial institutions. That said, individual institutions may have their own compliance requirements, so we recommend confirming with your bank, broker, or service provider regarding their acceptance of digitally notarized documents
Do I need notarization, attestation, or apostille — and what's the difference?
Notarization verifies your identity and signature, attestation confirms a document through an authorized authority, and apostille is an internationally recognized certification accepted across Hague Convention countries. Not sure which one you need? Read our detailed guide on notarization, attestation, apostille, and self-attestation for NRIs.
Which documents actually need notarization for NRO/NRE account opening?
Requirements vary by bank, but commonly include: Passport copy, Visa or residence permit, Overseas address proof, PAN card copy We'll confirm the exact requirements for your bank before you start.
Which documents actually need notarization for demat account opening?
Most brokers require notarized copies of your passport, PAN card, overseas address proof, visa or residence permit, and in some cases, proof of overseas income. The exact requirements vary by broker. Still not sure what your broker needs? We've put together a broker-by-broker guide covering notarization requirements for Zerodha, ICICI Direct, HDFC Sky, Groww, and other leading NRI demat providers.
