e-OCI Card (2026): How to Download It and What Changes for OCI Holders

Since July 2026, India has stopped printing OCI booklets. Every new OCI is now issued as an e-OCI, a digital card downloaded from the OCI portal and carried on a phone. Existing booklets still work, which has left many OCI holders unsure whether they need to switch, and what to show at the airport or the bank.
Switching isn't required. But anything issued from now on, from a passport update to a replacement for a lost booklet, comes back as an e-OCI, so most OCI holders will end up with one sooner or later.
This guide explains how to download the e-OCI, what changes for booklet holders and new applicants, how to fix wrong details, and what to carry when travelling or visiting an Indian bank. For the basics of OCI itself, start with our guide to the OCI card.
e-OCI Card: India's Digital OCI Card, Issued Since July 2026
The e-OCI, also written eOCI and called the electronic OCI card or digital OCI card, is a digital version of an OCI registration. It's a PDF that works wherever the booklet would be shown, from a phone or a printout. India launched it on 30 June 2026 for new applicants and existing booklet holders alike.
It doesn't create a new status or add any rights. It's the same OCI registration in digital form, and it's free to download.
Who Needs an e-OCI in a UAE Family
In most UAE families, only the members on foreign passports need one. Indian passport holders can't hold an OCI, because OCI is only for foreign nationals and India doesn't allow Indian and foreign citizenship together. That usually leaves:
A foreign spouse of an Indian citizen, once the marriage is registered and has lasted at least two years
Children on foreign passports, including newborns
Where to apply depends on where you live:
Dubai: fill in the application online, then email the Consulate General of India in Dubai to book an appointment to verify the originals. Applicants need a UAE residence visa held for at least 6 months, and for a spouse application, the Indian spouse attends the interview too.
Abu Dhabi and Al Ain: fill in the application online, then submit the printed application, in duplicate, at the Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi.
Once approved, the card arrives as an e-OCI, like everywhere else.

How to Download Your e-OCI Card, Step by Step
The e-OCI is free to download from ociservices.gov.in, and it takes a few steps as long as the email linked to the OCI still works. The official Indian Visa Su-Swagatam app is another way to download it.
Step 1: Log In With Your Registered Email
Go to ociservices.gov.in and log in with the email linked to your OCI.

If there's no account yet, register with that same email first.

Step 2: Update Your Email If You Can't Get In
If that email no longer works, or there's no email on the OCI record, it has to be changed before logging in. Use Email ID Updation under OCI Miscellaneous Services, with the OCI number, date of birth and the passport number linked to the OCI. Once the change is approved, log in with the new email.
Step 3: Generate the e-OCI and Save It
Open the e-OCI tab and click Generate e-OCI Card. Generation can be slow, so leave the page open until the PDF downloads. The card can be downloaded again up to five times a day.
Step 4: Check the Passport Number on the Card
Before relying on it, check that the passport number on the e-OCI matches the passport you'll travel with. If it shows an old passport, the passport details need updating first (see the section on wrong details below), and the card can be generated again once the update is approved.
Download e-OCI Cards for Your Whole Family
A single account can hold the whole family's cards, children included. Each card first needs linking to that account's email through Email ID Updation, one at a time. After that, every card can be generated from the same login.
Keep a copy offline. A PDF saved on the phone means there's no need to rely on the portal or airport Wi-Fi when travelling. On iPhone, Files or Books works well; on Android, Files or Google Drive with offline access turned on. A printed copy is fine too, as long as it meets the document rules in force at the time of travel.
Existing OCI Holders: Your Booklet Stays Valid
Existing OCI booklets still work. They remain valid for immigration and everything else an OCI is used for, and the OCI number stays the same.
Do You Have to Switch to the e-OCI
No. The booklet can go on being used as before. Downloading the e-OCI is still worth doing: it's free, and it's a backup on the phone if the booklet is ever forgotten or lost.
The e-OCI becomes unavoidable the next time anything on the card changes. Booklets are no longer printed, so a passport update or a replacement card comes back as an e-OCI. Children's booklets work the same way: valid until their card needs updating.
Lost Your Booklet but Have the e-OCI
A lost booklet still needs to be reported and replaced, even with the e-OCI already on the phone. A downloaded copy doesn't replace the physical card on its own, so the loss has to go on record.
The application goes under OCI Miscellaneous Services, as loss or damage, and usually needs:
A police report that includes your lost OCI card number
A copy of the lost card, where your e-OCI or a scan helps
Your current foreign passport
Your biometrics, taken at the mission or outsourcing centre
Once it's approved, the replacement is issued as an e-OCI. In the US, it costs US$100, plus a US$3 Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF) fee and a US$19 VFS charge.
New OCI Applicants: Same e-OCI Application, Digital Card at the End
New applicants now receive an e-OCI and no booklet. The application itself hasn't changed, and since 8 July 2026 the card issued at the end is digital.
What Still Happens on Paper
The form is still filled in on ociservices.gov.in, and documents still go to the outsourcing centre: VFS in the US and UK, BLS in Canada. In the US, that's the VFS centre for the consulate covering where the applicant ordinarily lives. Only the last step is different. Once the OCI is approved, an email arrives with a link to download the card, and nothing is posted.
Each consulate lists its current document requirements on its OCI page, so it's worth checking there before sending anything.
Indian Embassy and Consulate OCI Pages
Country | Mission | OCI page |
|---|---|---|
US | Embassy of India, Washington DC | |
US | Consulate General of India, New York | |
US | Consulate General of India, San Francisco | |
US | Consulate General of India, Chicago | |
US | Consulate General of India, Houston | |
UK | High Commission of India, London | |
UK | Consulate General of India, Birmingham | |
UK | Consulate General of India, Edinburgh | |
Canada | High Commission of India, Ottawa | |
Canada | Consulate General of India, Toronto | |
Canada | Consulate General of India, Vancouver | |
UAE | Embassy of India, Abu Dhabi | |
UAE | Consulate General of India, Dubai |
How Long the e-OCI Is Taking
Most e-OCIs are arriving within a month of the appointment, and some much faster. Here's how long recent applicants waited at different missions, which helps when planning a trip.
Mission | Time to e-OCI | When |
|---|---|---|
San Francisco | 2 days after payment, after emailing the consulate | October 2026 |
London (Goswell) | Ready 6 days after biometrics | October 2026 |
Netherlands | 10 days | October 2026 |
New York | 19 days from the VFS appointment | September 2026 |
New York, newborn | Under 3 weeks | October 2026 |
Washington DC | About 1 month | September 2026 |
Until the OCI shows as granted on ociservices.gov.in, it's safer not to book travel that depends on it.
Applying for a Newborn or Child
Children apply the same way adults do, with a parent's documents and a signed parental authorisation, and their card also arrives as an e-OCI. A parent who holds an OCI can download a child's e-OCI from their own account once the child's card is linked to it, as the download steps above explain.
Wrong Details on Your e-OCI and How to Fix Them
Wrong details on an e-OCI are fixed on the OCI record first, and then the card is downloaded again. The card always shows what's on the record, so changes to name, nationality or passport go through OCI Miscellaneous Services, and the new details appear once the change is approved.
New Passport: Update Online, No More Re-Issue
A new passport no longer means a new OCI, at any age. Re-issue has been discontinued, and the OCI is updated online instead:
Update your passport details within 3 months of getting the new passport. It's free if you do it in that time.
If your new passport was issued when you were 20 or older, give your biometrics once.
Once the update is approved, generate your e-OCI again.
Missing the 3-month window means a late fee. In the US, that's US$47, made up of a US$25 consular fee, the US$3 ICWF fee and a US$19 VFS charge.
The steps differ slightly for a new US passport, a new British passport and a renewed Canadian passport, mostly in where the late fee is paid.
Name, Gender or Address Errors
A wrong name, gender or other personal detail is corrected by applying for a change of personal particulars under OCI Miscellaneous Services, with the documents the form asks for. It's worth checking every field the day the card arrives, so any mistake is fixed before travelling.
Address changes go through the same route, but the new address won't show on the card itself. An e-OCI that still shows the old address after the update is normal.
Regenerate the e-OCI After an Update
A downloaded copy doesn't update itself. Once a change is approved, log in, open the e-OCI tab and click Generate e-OCI Card again, then delete the old PDF so the wrong one doesn't get shown at the airport.
Showing Your e-OCI at Check-In and Immigration
The e-OCI can be shown on a phone at Indian immigration and to airlines, together with the current foreign passport. Keep it ready to show whenever it's asked for. The booklet isn't needed to clear immigration. Travelling on a new passport, or while an update is still pending, has its own rules.
When the Airline Kiosk Reads It as a Visa
Some airline self check-in kiosks don't recognise the e-OCI yet and read it as a visa. A few habits keep that from causing delays:
Carry your booklet if you have one, as well as the e-OCI on your phone.
If a kiosk won't take your e-OCI, check in at the counter instead.
Keep the PDF saved offline in case you can't get online at the airport.
Common Portal Errors and How to Fix Them
Most e-OCI problems come from an outdated email on the OCI record or a slow portal. Here's what usually causes each error and how to fix it.
Error | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
Portal won't load or shows a certificate error | Heavy traffic or a site issue | Try another browser, clear your cache, or try at a different time of day |
Record Not Found | Details don't match your OCI record | Re-check your OCI number, date of birth and linked passport number. Still failing: contact your Indian Mission, FRRO or the OCI helpdesk |
OTP not received | Email or mobile on record is wrong, or the OTP went to spam | Check spam or junk, wait and retry; if your email is outdated, use Email ID Updation |
e-OCI is slow to generate | Backend processing | Wait and don't close the page; a delay doesn't mean the portal has crashed |
Download limit reached | 5 downloads per card per day | Try again the next day |
Card shows your old passport | Passport update not filed or not yet approved | Update your passport details, then regenerate after approval |
Using Your e-OCI With Indian Banks, Brokers and Telecoms
The e-OCI works in India too, at banks, brokers and phone stores, though some branches are still getting used to it.
Before opening an account, buying a SIM or updating KYC, it helps to:
Ask which OCI document they accept: the booklet, the e-OCI PDF or a printout.
Take your booklet along if you have one.
Be ready with a notarised copy. Indian banks and brokers often ask OCI holders for notarised copies of their OCI and passport. Zerodha, for example, asks for a notarised copy of the passport and OCI card when opening an NRI account.
Our notaries can notarise those copies over a video call, from your phone, to the standard Indian banks and brokers ask for. We're also Zerodha's official NRI onboarding partner, so OCI holders looking to invest in India can open a Zerodha NRI demat account with us without travelling.
e-OCI Card: Questions OCI Holders Ask
Does the e-OCI Card Expire?
No. OCI registration is lifelong, and the e-OCI reflects it. What changes is the passport linked to it, so a fresh copy is needed after every passport update.
How Much Does the e-OCI Card Cost?
Downloading the e-OCI, or eOCI, is free, so there's no need to pay an agency for it. New applicants pay the usual OCI application fee and receive the e-OCI at the end.
Do I Have to Hand In My OCI Booklet?
No. The booklet is kept and can still be used. It's only surrendered when giving up OCI status altogether.
Does the e-OCI Change My Aadhaar or PAN?
No. The e-OCI only changes the format of the OCI card, so any existing Aadhaar or PAN stays as it is. Getting Aadhaar or PAN for the first time as an OCI holder works differently.
Does the e-OCI Give Me Any New Rights in India?
No. OCI status and rights stay the same: lifelong multiple-entry travel to India, and banking and investing in India on NRI terms.
