How to Get Documents Notarized for an NRI Demat Account (Zerodha, Angel One & ICICI Direct)

One of the most common reasons NRI demat account applications get delayed is incorrect document attestation. Some brokers accept self-attested copies. Others require notarization or embassy certification.

And which one applies depends on your KYC status and where you’re applying from. Getting this wrong means weeks of back-and-forth before your account opens.

This guide covers the notarization requirements for Zerodha, Angel One, and ICICI Direct, so you know exactly what to prepare before sending your documents.

Notarization, attestation or apostille for Demat?
A Quick Answer

  • Zerodha → Only if your PAN is not KYC-verified as NRI in CVL-KRA

  • Angel One → Yes, for overseas applicants

  • ICICI Direct → Yes, unless verified in person at a branch in India

Demat Notarization Requirements: Zerodha, Angle One, ICICI Direct

Different brokers have different requirements for notarizing NRI documents. The table below compares the documents, accepted attesting authorities, and whether notarization can be avoided.

Why Do Notarization Requirements Differ by Broker?

NRI demat account onboarding is governed by SEBI’s KYC Registration Agency (KRA) and Central KYC (CKYC) frameworks - not bank-specific NRI rules. Two factors determine whether notarization applies:

  • KRA status: If your PAN is updated as “Non-Resident” in the CVL-KRA system, notarization is typically waived. If it still shows “Resident,” physical verification or notarization is required to update your tax residency status.

  • Where you’re applying from: Applications from overseas typically require notarization or embassy attestation. If you’re physically in India, In-Person Verification (IPV) by an authorized broker representative can remove that requirement.

Which Documents Usually Need Notarization?

When notarization is required, it typically applies to:

  • Passport (photo page, address page, and latest visa/arrival stamp page)

  • PAN card

  • Overseas address proof

  • Indian address proof (if applicable)

  • OCI/PIO card copy (where applicable)

Who Can Notarize Your Documents?

The following authorities are generally accepted by Indian brokers:

  • Rupeeflo (the only digital option accepted at the 3 brokers mentioned in this piece)

  • Notary Public in your country of residence

  • Indian Embassy or Consulate General

  • Authorized officials of overseas branches of Indian scheduled commercial banks

  • Scheduled commercial or multinational banks registered in India

  • Court Magistrate or Judge

For applicants in India, most brokers accept IPV at a branch or by an authorized representative.

Pre-Submission Checklist

Before sending documents or submitting your application, confirm the following:

  • RON acceptance: If you used a Remote Online Notarization (RON) platform, verify the broker accepts electronically notarized documents.

  • Name consistency: Names and addresses must match exactly across your application, KRA records, passport, visa, and address proof.

  • KRA status: Check your CVL-KRA record before applying. An outdated or “Resident” status will trigger additional documentation.

  • Latest forms: Download the current account-opening checklist directly from the broker’s website.

  • Keep copies: Retain scans of everything submitted, including courier tracking details.

FAQs

Does checking CVL-KRA status eliminate the need for notarization?

Not always. Zerodha states that notarization may not be required when your PAN already reflects Non-Resident status in the KRA system - see their full attestation guide. The final requirement always depends on the broker’s compliance process.

What is the difference between a PIS and Non-PIS account?

PIS (Portfolio Investment Scheme) accounts are RBI-regulated and linked to NRE accounts for investing in listed stocks. Non-PIS accounts are used for investments not routed through the PIS framework and are typically linked to NRO accounts.

Can the same notarized documents be used for a demat account and an NRO bank account?

Often yes, provided the documents are still valid and meet each institution’s authentication standards. Brokers and banks follow different compliance frameworks, so additional certification may still be requested.

Can a resident demat account be converted to an NRI demat account without visiting India?

Many brokers allow this. The process typically requires updated NRI KYC documents, a residential status change, and submission of broker-specific conversion forms. You can check out how we do this for Zerodha NRI Demat Accounts.

Do NRIs need RBI permission to open a demat account?

No. There is no separate RBI approval required. The account must comply with applicable NRI investment regulations, broker onboarding requirements, and KYC verification standards.

Disclaimer: Documentation requirements, accepted attesting authorities, KYC procedures, and onboarding policies may change. Brokers may request additional documents based on residential jurisdiction, account type, existing KRA records, or internal compliance review. Always refer to the broker’s latest onboarding guidelines before submitting paperwork.
