Got a New US Passport? How to Link It to Your OCI (Free Within 3 Months)

3 Nov 2026 · @Apoorva

Once a new US passport arrives, the old one is easy to put aside. But an OCI card remains linked to the old passport number until those details are updated. And that update comes with a deadline: three months from the date the new passport is issued.

Within that window, the update is free and can be completed online. After three months, it costs US$47 through VFS, with applications sometimes remaining "pending" for months.

The process has three possible routes: a routine update, a late update or a full re-issue. This guide explains when each applies, what the process involves and what to do if the three-month deadline has already passed.

Do You Need to Update Your OCI After Getting a New US Passport?

Yes, every time you get a new passport, whatever your age. An update is a short online form that links your new passport number to your existing OCI, and it's free if you do it within three months of getting the passport. Until 2026, adults between 20 and 50 could skip it, but that exemption is gone, so it now applies to everyone.

For most people this is a short online update. A few need a re-issue instead.

OCI Renewal vs OCI Passport Update

Your OCI is for life and never expires.

But your passport does, and your OCI is linked to a specific passport number. So each time you get a new passport, your OCI has to be pointed at the new number. There are two ways to do that, and which one you need depends on your situation.

For almost everyone, it's an update. This links your existing OCI to your new passport number. You do it online, it's free within three months (US$47 after that), and you don't get a new card: your e-OCI simply works with the new passport from then on.

It covers almost any new passport, for example:

  • Your passport expired and you renewed it

  • You renewed it early, before it expired

  • You replaced a lost, stolen or damaged passport

  • Your under-20 child's passport was renewed

One exception: if your name changed, that's a re-issue, not an update.

In a few cases, it's a re-issue instead. This includes the following instances:

  • Your first passport after turning 20, if you got your OCI before turning 20

  • A name change, including after marriage

  • A lost or damaged card

  • A change of nationality

  • A correction to your OCI details, other than your address or occupation

Here your OCI document is regenerated, so you get a new e-OCI, though it's still the same lifelong OCI underneath. A re-issue costs US$47 as of today in the USA.

Your First Passport After Turning 20 Needs a Re-Issue

If you got your OCI before you turned 20 and this is your first passport since, you need a re-issue, and only this once. It regenerates your OCI with an adult photo, which a plain update can't do.

Your old OCI is replaced by the new e-OCI, so there's nothing you need to do with the old one. You apply online, then send a paper packet to VFS by post or in person, and the fee is US$47.

OCI Renewal at Age 50 (Now Just a Passport Update)

The first passport you got after turning 50 used to need a re-issue. Now it's handled like any other new passport: a free online update within three months. Some consulate websites still show the old age rule, but it no longer applies.

Updating Your OCI Within 3 Months: The Free Online Steps

Within the three months, the whole update happens on the OCI portal, and nothing needs to go to VFS or the consulate. Before you start, keep your OCI number, your old passport number and a scan of your new passport's photo page close at hand.

Step 1: Log In to OCI Miscellaneous Services

Open OCI Miscellaneous Services on the portal and register with the details on your current OCI. If you get a Record Not Found error, something you've typed doesn't match your OCI record exactly. Check each detail against your OCI as it's printed, and if it still doesn't go through, email your consulate.

Step 2: Choose Passport Particulars Updation, Not Re-Issue

Select the option to update your passport particulars. If the portal asks you for a re-issue fee at this point, you've most likely picked the wrong service, so go back before paying anything. The only time a re-issue is the right choice is the age-20 case covered earlier.

Step 3: Upload Your New Passport and a Recent Photo

Upload a scan of your new passport's photo page along with a photo taken in the last 30 days. Large files can fail to upload, so it's worth shrinking your scans before you begin. If your OCI is based on your marriage to an Indian citizen or OCI holder, you'll also need a couple of extra documents, which are listed in the section on spouses further down.

Step 4: Submit and Save Your Government Reference Number

Submit the form and save the acknowledgement with your reference number. For a passport update, your application number should end in U26. You'll use it to check your status on the portal, and VFS will ask for it if you end up paying the late fee.

Updating Your OCI After 3 Months: The US$47 Late Fee

Within three months of your new passport, the update is free. Miss that window and it costs US$47. You fill in the same online form either way, so the deadline only decides whether you pay. The steps are in the next section; here's the money and the timing.

Flowchart of what to do after a new US passport. First: is this your first passport after turning 20, with an OCI issued before 20? If yes, a re-issue (paper packet to VFS, US$47). If no: are you within 3 months of the issue date? If yes, a free online update on the OCI portal, no VFS. If no, file the update, wait for the consulate's email, pay US$47 at VFS for the issuing consulate, and it's processed once VFS confirms.

Two things decide your route: whether this is your first passport since turning 20, and whether you're still inside the three months.

When the 3-Month Clock Starts

Count three months from the issue date printed in your passport. Some consulates count from when the passport reaches you, but the issue date is the one you can prove. If your passport was issued on 10 January 2026, aim to finish the update by 10 April 2026, even if it arrived a week later.

What the US$47 Late Fee Covers

Part

Amount

Consular fee (the late penalty)

US$25

Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF)

US$3

VFS service fee

US$19

Total

US$47

The ICWF is a small charge added to most Indian consular services. The VFS part can vary slightly by consulate, so check the exact amount on your consulate's VFS page before you pay.

The OCI Portal Says the Penalty Is Waived. US Consulates Still Charge It.

You may come across a line in the OCI portal's FAQ saying the US$25 penalty is waived until 31 December 2026. As of 3 November 2026, the US consulates are still charging the full US$47 for late updates, so budget for it unless your consulate tells you it isn't needed.

Passport Renewed Before the 2026 Rule Change

If you renewed your passport in 2025 or earlier, when adults didn't need to update their OCI, you're almost certainly past the three months already. There's no exemption for older passports, so expect to pay the US$47. Plenty of OCI holders find that unfair, and a petition is doing the rounds, but updating now is the quickest way to get your OCI and passport back in step.

How to Pay the US$47 Late Fee at VFS

If you've missed the three months, you still file the same update online, then pay US$47 to the VFS centre for the consulate that issued your OCI. Your update only moves forward once VFS confirms the payment to the consulate, which is why the order of the next few steps matters.

Wait for the Consulate's Email Before You Pay

If your OCI is with the Seattle consulate, wait until it emails you to say the fee is due, and include a copy of that email with your payment. Not every consulate asks for this, so check yours before sending any money. Paying too early, or paying the wrong VFS centre, is one of the ways an update ends up rejected for "no fee" after the money has already gone.

The "Eligible for Late Fee Payment" Message on the Portal

A note saying your application is "eligible for late fee payment" means your update has been received and is now waiting for payment. The note mentions US$25 because that's the consular part of the fee. Once the ICWF and the VFS charge are added, the amount you pay in the US is US$47.

Check Your Application Number Ends in U26

Before you pay, look at the end of your application number. VFS only accepts the late fee for passport update requests, which end in U26. If yours ends differently, the application was filed under another service and VFS won't be able to match your payment to it, so file a fresh passport update first.

Paying in Person, by Mail or by Money Order

You can pay in two ways, both to the VFS centre for the consulate that issued your OCI:

  • In person. Seattle, for example, takes walk-in payments between 2:00 and 3:00 pm, Monday to Friday.

  • By mail, with a single money order or cashier's check for US$47 made out to VFS Services USA Inc. Personal checks aren't accepted.

Send the payment with your printed application, a copy of your new passport, proof of your US address and, if your consulate asked for one, a copy of its email. A payment on its own can hold things up.

Why the Update Stays Pending Until VFS Confirms Payment

After you pay, VFS passes the payment on to the consulate, and only then does anyone look at your update, so a few weeks of "pending" is normal. Make sure your OCI number and new passport number are exactly the same on the VFS form and the online form, otherwise the two can't be matched. Keep your VFS receipt, and if nothing has changed after a few weeks, email it to your consulate with your reference number. For some people, that email is what finally gets the update approved.

Which US Consulate Handles Your OCI Passport Update

If you missed the three months and are paying the late fee, it goes to the consulate that issued your OCI, not the one nearest you now. So if San Francisco issued your OCI and you've since moved to Illinois, the fee still goes to San Francisco's VFS centre. (Within the three months it's all online, so none of this applies.)

Each consulate runs this a little differently, and these are the differences that affect what you do:

Consulate pages get updated from time to time, so always cross-check your own consulate's page.

Moved States, or Now Under the Seattle Consulate

Moving doesn't move your OCI. If New York issued it and you now live in Texas, your late payment still goes to New York's VFS centre, even though the VFS form asks for your current state. It's the same if San Francisco issued your OCI and your state now falls under Seattle. The portal may not let you switch consulates, so email the one that issued your OCI before you pay anyone.

OCI Issued in India, the UK or Canada

If your OCI was issued outside the US, updates usually go to the Indian mission for the country you're a citizen of, or the country you live in if that's different. Email both your US consulate and the mission that issued your OCI before paying, so you know which one will process it.

Updating OCI for Minors, Spouses and Name Mismatches

Children and spouses follow the same three-month rule, and spouses upload a couple of extra documents. A name change is the one situation where a passport update won't work.

Updating a Minor's Renewed US Passport on OCI

US passports for children under 16 are only valid for five years, so most families do this update a few times before a child turns 20. Each time, it's the same free online update within three months, filed by a parent using the child's OCI details. Since the US$47 late fee applies to children too, it's worth setting a reminder from the day the new passport is issued.

Later on, your child's first passport after turning 20 will need a re-issue instead of an update.

Foreign Spouse of an Indian Citizen or OCI Holder

If your OCI is based on your marriage to an Indian citizen or an OCI holder, you update it every time you get a new passport, within the same three months. Along with your new passport and photo, you'll upload:

  • a declaration that you're still married, and

  • a copy of your Indian spouse's passport, or your OCI-holder spouse's passport and OCI card.

When Your OCI Name or Details Don't Match Your US Passport

If your name has changed, including after marriage, you need a re-issue. A passport update only changes the passport details, so it won't fix the name on your OCI.

Smaller mismatches come up too, such as a middle name that's on your US passport but missing from your OCI, or the portal showing you as "Unmarried" when you're married. Any correction other than your address or occupation goes through a re-issue, so email your consulate before you submit if something on the review page doesn't look right.

OCI Update Status, Timelines and What to Do If It's Stuck

You can check where your update stands at any time on the OCI portal's Status Enquiry page, using your reference number. Re-issues are meant to be decided within about 15 days, but in practice updates in the US often take weeks or months, and late ones tend to take longest.

Real Timelines From US Consulates

Here's how long a few recent updates took, as shared by OCI holders on Reddit in 2026:

Consulate

Case

What happened

Houston

Passport update

New passport issued 8 July, update filed 20 July, "under process" from 8 September, updated e-OCI on 21 October

San Francisco

Late update

Three months with no payment instructions; updated e-OCI two days after the VFS receipt was emailed to the consulate

Not stated

Child's passport update

Filed at the end of May, still "under process" in mid-August

Rejected Even After Paying the VFS Fee

A rejection after you've paid usually means the payment and the application weren't matched up. The OCI or passport number on the VFS form may not have matched your online form, the payment may have gone to the wrong VFS centre, or the application number may not have ended in U26. Start with VFS, with your receipt to hand, then email your consulate with the receipt and your reference number. If you're owed a refund, you'll usually have to claim it from VFS.

Common Portal Errors and How to Get Past Them

  • Record Not Found: something you entered doesn't match your OCI record. Type it exactly as it appears on your OCI, and email your consulate if it still fails.

  • Wrong details on the review page, such as your marital status: don't submit yet. Email your consulate first.

  • VFS can't validate your address for courier: contact VFS before you pay, so your payment and courier details go through together.

If weeks of emails to the consulate get no reply, you can raise a complaint on MADAD, the Indian government's portal for consular complaints, or on CPGRAMS, its general public grievance portal.

Can You Travel to India While Your OCI Update Is Pending?

Yes. There's no restriction on travel while your update is being processed, and you no longer need to carry your old passport along with your OCI. Flying on a new passport, or with an update still in progress, does come with a few check-in and immigration details of its own, and we cover those in our guide to travelling to India on an OCI card.

Link OCI With New Passport: Questions US OCI Holders Ask

Do I Need to Update My OCI if Only My Address Has Changed?

No. A change of address or occupation doesn't need an OCI update.

Can I Update My OCI Before My Old Passport Expires?

Yes. What counts is the date your new passport was issued, so you can update your OCI as soon as you have it, whatever the expiry date on the old one.

Where Do I Find My OCI Government Reference Number?

It's generated when you submit your update and shows up on the acknowledgement you save at the end. Keep it, because you'll need it to check your status on the portal and to pay the late fee at VFS.

What Size Should the Photo and Passport Scan Be?

The OCI portal accepts JPEG files only, up to 200 KB each. Your photo must be square, between 200x200 and 900x900 pixels, and taken within the last 30 days. Your signature goes in a separate file, between 200x67 and 900x300 pixels. If a file is too big to upload, compress it first rather than retrying.

Can I Update My Spouse's OCI at the Same Time as Mine?

You file a separate application for each OCI, using that person's own details, so you can do yours and your spouse's one after the other but not in a single form. If your spouse holds their OCI through marriage to you, their update also needs a declaration that the marriage still stands and a copy of your passport or OCI.
