How to Update Your PAN After Becoming an NRI

How to Update Your PAN After Becoming an NRI

Moving abroad does not mean getting a new PAN. Your PAN remains the same for life; what changes is the information attached to it. The PAN number itself never changes.

But, once you become an NRI, three things typically need updating on your PAN record:

  • your residential status,

  • your address, and

  • sometimes your passport details.

Residential status is the one to get right first, because of how much rides on it.  That's exactly the field that caused the wave of NRI PAN deactivations reported from July 2023 onward, when accounts still marked "Resident" got flagged automatically, serious enough that NSE and BSE separately warned NRI trading accounts would be blocked over it.

Address and passport details carry far less weight, but still need fixing eventually. Unlike residential status, they're not a profile edit - they go through Protean or UTIITSL instead, using a separate correction form, and updating one doesn't touch the other.

Here's each of these, in the order that matters, and exactly where it happens.

How Do You Update Your Residential Status to NRI?

This is the change that matters most, and the one most NRIs miss. Residential status is a self-declared field in your e-filing profile, separate from your PAN card’s printed details. It’s what the department uses to decide which ITR form to offer you, and whether your PAN gets caught by Aadhaar-linking consequences.

  1. Log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal using your PAN and password.

  2. Click your name in the top-right corner and select My Profile.

  3. Under your profile, click Edit in the personal details section.

  4. Change your Residential Status to Non-Resident.

  5. Click Save.

If you don't have an Indian mobile number, the Income Tax Department says the OTP required for verifying your contact details can be sent to the email address registered on your e-filing profile. You should also receive an email when your profile is updated.

One important distinction: this profile update is not the same as determining your tax residency for a particular financial year. Your actual residential status for income-tax purposes is determined separately under the applicable stay and other conditions. The profile update simply ensures that the residential-status information held on your e-filing account is current.

Once this is done, you can move on to the details that require a separate PAN correction - such as your overseas address or passport details.

How Do You Correct Your Address, Name, or Passport Details on the PAN Record?

Changing your residential status on the e-filing portal does not automatically update the other details in your PAN record. If you've moved abroad and need to change your address, name, passport number, or other PAN details, you need to submit a separate PAN correction request.

For individuals, the current correction form is PAN CR-01. You can submit it through an authorised PAN service provider such as Protean, or UTIITSL, the two agencies that maintain the actual PAN database.

The same PAN correction process can be used by both Indian citizens and non-citizens.

  1. Go to either the Protean PAN correction service or the UTIITSL PAN correction service.

  2. Use PAN CR-01 for individuals, or PAN CR-02 for non-individual entities such as companies and trusts.

  3. Select the fields you want to change, such as your address, name, or passport number.

  4. For a foreign address, the government-set fee is approximately ₹1,020 plus GST. This is the applicable Income Tax Department fee regardless of whether you submit the correction through Protean or UTIITSL.

  5. The foreign-address fee is higher than the approximately ₹110 domestic fee because it includes international dispatch. Payment can be made by card, net banking, or demand draft payable at Mumbai.

  6. Attach the required proof. A valid passport can typically serve as proof of identity and, for NRIs, address. If you're submitting a foreign-issued address document such as a lease or utility bill, it needs to be apostilled or attested by the Indian embassy or consulate in your country of residence.

  7. Note the 15-digit acknowledgement number and keep it until the correction is reflected in your PAN record.

If you're still an Indian passport holder, your passport can cover both identity and your overseas address in the correction application. If you've since acquired foreign citizenship or hold an OCI card, select the relevant citizenship/passport details and provide your foreign passport and OCI card as applicable.

This correction does not change your PAN number. It only updates the details associated with your existing PAN.

Do NRIs Need to Link PAN with Aadhaar?

Once you've updated your residential status and corrected your PAN details, there's one more question many NRIs have: do you also need to link your PAN with Aadhaar?

The short answer is no, if you qualify as a non-resident under the Income-tax Act. CBDT Notification No. 37/2017 exempts non-residents from mandatory PAN-Aadhaar linking.

However, there's an important catch: your residential status needs to be correctly reflected in your Income Tax Department profile. If it still shows "Resident" after you've moved abroad, the department's automated checks may not recognise that you qualify for the exemption. This was at the centre of the NRI PAN deactivation issue reported from July 2023 onward. If your PAN has already become inoperative because your residential status wasn't updated, we've covered how to make your PAN operative again in our guide here.

If you already have an Aadhaar number from before moving abroad, linking it is optional if you qualify for the exemption. If you don't have Aadhaar, you don't need to obtain one just to make your PAN operative.

Changing Your PAN Jurisdiction After Moving Abroad

Your PAN is mapped to a Jurisdictional Assessing Officer (JAO) based on the address in the Income Tax Department's records. For NRIs, this will typically be an international taxation or non-resident ward.

You generally don't need to change your JAO immediately after moving abroad. It becomes relevant if you're filing a return, responding to a notice, dealing with a refund issue, or need to contact an assessing officer about a specific tax matter.

If your existing AO can't be reached or your jurisdiction needs to be transferred, use the Know Your AO facility on the Income Tax e-filing portal to identify the appropriate JAO. The department's JAO guidance explains the transfer process, including the applications required with the existing and new JAO.

For most NRIs, this is not an immediate part of updating your PAN after moving abroad. You only need to deal with the jurisdiction when a specific tax matter requires it.

What Else Changes Once You’re an NRI?

PAN is the record most NRIs deal with first because banks and brokers check it automatically, but it’s rarely the only thing that needs correcting. Once your residential status is sorted on the ITD side, the same change usually needs to follow through to:

  • Bank accounts. RBI rules require redesignating a resident savings account once you’re non-resident — banks don’t get discretion here. Resident accounts get redesignated as NRO, or you open an NRE/NRO account and move funds across.

  • Demat and trading accounts. Brokers enforce the same residential-status update as their own KYC policy, and they enforce it hard: several (including NSE and BSE circulars from 2024) have blocked NRI trading accounts over unlinked PAN and stale residential status.

  • KYC records with any mutual fund, insurer, or depository participant you’re already registered with, since they pull the same PAN-linked data.

If any of these updates need a document apostilled or attested before it can be submitted, which comes up constantly with JAO submissions and PAN correction forms, build in extra time for it. Apostille and embassy-attestation turnaround usually runs longer than the PAN correction itself.

FAQs

Can I keep using my old PAN card that still shows my Indian address?
Yes. The physical card stays valid for identity and financial transactions even with an outdated address printed on it. For tax purposes, what governs is the residential status and address in the ITD’s electronic record. Update the card itself only if an institution specifically insists on a matching physical document.

Will my bank or broker know automatically once I’ve fixed my residential status on the e-filing portal?
No. The e-filing correction only updates the Income Tax Department’s record. Your bank, broker, or depository participant checks PAN status independently and won’t see the change until you update KYC with them directly, usually by submitting the same proof documents (passport, overseas address proof) to each institution separately.

Is there a deadline for making this correction after I move abroad?
No statutory deadline exists, but delay is exactly what triggers deactivation, since the automated check has no way to know you moved until you update the field. Fix it before your next return is due, or before a bank or broker flags your KYC, whichever comes first.

How do I know if my JAO reactivation request actually went through?
Check My Profile → PAN Details periodically. There’s no separate tracking portal for this specific request. The department’s own guidance is to recheck after a few days, and again after the 7–30 day window, since reactivation doesn’t come with a proactive notification beyond the standard profile-update email.

If I move back to India permanently, do I reverse all of this?
Yes. Residential status goes back to Resident on the e-filing profile, and if you’d updated your PAN address to a foreign one, that gets corrected back through the same PAN CR-01 process with an Indian address and proof.
