OCI Miscellaneous Services UK: How to Transfer Your OCI to a New British Passport

Your OCI card is for life, but inside the system it stays tied to one passport number. The day your new British passport is issued, your OCI still points at the old one, and that mismatch is what you need to clear.
Clearing it is a quick online job, a passport particulars update, and it is free when you do it within three months of the new passport. After three months it still gets done, it just costs around £30. And you can fly to India throughout, even before the update is acknowledged, as long as you carry the right documents.
Here is how to do all of it from your phone: whether you need to act at all, what it costs and how to pay when there is no payment link, which VFS centre handles you, and what to do if it stalls.
Do You Need to Update Your OCI After a New British Passport?
Yes. Every time you get a new passport you have to update your OCI with the new passport details, whatever your age. Your OCI is read against the passport you travel on, so the two have to carry the same number. Until you update it, your OCI is still linked to your old passport.
What you do not need is a new OCI card or a fresh application. This is a small change to your existing OCI, and since 2026 the card is digital, so nothing is reprinted or posted. Your e-OCI regenerates with the new passport details once the change is processed.
OCI Renewal, Transfer or Update: What the Terms Mean
People call this an OCI renewal, an OCI transfer, or linking a new passport, and all of them point to the same thing. The OCI portal calls it a passport particulars update, under Miscellaneous Services. There is nothing to renew, because your OCI does not expire; renewal is simply the word most people reach for.
You may also see older consulate pages and agency sites mention a re-issue at 20 or 50. For a new passport that no longer applies in the UK, which is what the next two sections clear up. What you are doing is an update.
The Age 20 Rule Now: a One-Time Biometric Visit, Not a Re-Issue
If you have read that an OCI must be re-issued once the holder turns 20, that has changed. The mandatory re-issue on turning 20 has been dispensed with, so a new passport after 20 is handled as the same passport particulars update as any other.
There is one extra step the first time. If your new passport was issued after you turned 20, you give your biometrics once at a VFS centre, or at the immigration desk on your first entry to India. That single biometric capture is all that remains of the old age-20 rule, and it exists because your facial features change between childhood and adulthood.
OCI Renewal After 50 Is No Longer a Separate Step
The old rule that asked for another re-issue at 50 has gone too. There is no separate OCI step at 50; you update your passport details the same way you would at any other age. If a page still tells you to re-issue your OCI at 50, it is out of date.
Can You Travel to India While Your OCI Transfer Is Pending?
Yes. You can travel to and from India from the day your new passport is issued, right through until the update is acknowledged online. There is no restriction in between, so a pending update is not a reason to delay a trip.
Carry three things together:
your new passport,
your old passport (the one still linked to your OCI), and
your OCI itself.
At Indian immigration they match your OCI to the old passport number and let you travel on the new one.
One caution: if you travel without having started the update at all, immigration can give you an oral warning and stamp your OCI, after which you are expected to finish the update within a month or before you leave India.
Starting it before you fly avoids that. The full rules for travelling on an OCI, including what to carry when the passport changes mid-trip, are in our guide to travelling to India on an OCI card.
What an OCI Passport Update Costs in the UK, and the 3-Month Free Window
Update within three months of your new passport and it is free. Miss that window and the fee comes to around £30, going by the charges the UK missions and VFS currently publish. Those published figures differ by a pound or two between the missions, so treat £30 as a working budget rather than a fixed price. It is still well below the £100 to £125 that OCI agencies charge, where most of the price is their own handling fee on top of the government charge.
When the 3-Month Clock Starts
The three months run from your new passport's date of issue, (not from when your old one expired). Count three months, or 90 days, from the issue date printed in your new passport.
So a passport issued on 15 October 2026 gives you until 15 January 2027 to update your OCI for free. After that date the fee applies.
The Late Fee, and How to Pay It Without a Payment Link
Miss the window and the update still goes through, just with a late fee.
Here is what it comes to:
What you pay | Amount | Who charges it |
|---|---|---|
£21 to £23 | High Commission or Consulate | |
VFS service charge | about £7.44 | VFS Global UK |
Total after three months | about £30 |
The figures the missions publish differ by a pound or two, so treat around £30 as your ballpark budget rather than an exact total.
The question almost everyone asks is where to pay, because the OCI portal shows no payment link.
There is no online payment because the fee is collected by VFS, not the portal. After you submit the online form, you pay VFS directly: by debit card when you attend the VFS centre, or by postal order or bank draft made out to 'VF Services UK Ltd'. Personal cheques and credit cards are not accepted.
One more thing worth knowing: the OCI portal's own FAQ lists a separate USD 25 late penalty and says it is waived until 31 December 2026. The UK missions still charge their own fee above, so budget for the roughly £30 either way, and treat the waived penalty as one charge you should not see on top.
How to Transfer Your OCI to a New British Passport, Step by Step
The whole thing is done online on the OCI portal, with a short VFS step only if you are paying a fee or giving biometrics. Here is the order.
Step 1: Log In to OCI Miscellaneous Services
Go to the OCI Services portal and open Miscellaneous Services. Sign in with your OCI details. This is the same government site for every country, so there is no separate UK portal to find.
Step 2: Choose Passport Particulars Updation, Not Re-Issue
Pick the option to update your passport particulars. Updation is the right choice for a new passport at any age, so you do not select re-issue unless its a brand new passport.
Step 3: Upload Your New British Passport and a Recent Photo
Upload a scan of the photo page of your new passport, a photograph taken within the last 30 days, and your signature. Follow the portal's size and format rules so it is accepted first time.
Step 4: Submit and Save Your Reference Number
Submit the form and note the reference number it gives you. You need it to track the status, and to show VFS if a fee or biometrics apply.
Step 5: Pay at VFS and Give Biometrics If Needed
Inside the three-month window, with no biometrics due, you are finished here. Past the window, you pay the fee to VFS as above. And if your new passport was issued after you turned 20, you give your biometrics once at your nearest VFS centre, or at Indian immigration on your first entry.
Once it is processed, your e-OCI regenerates with the new passport details. In the UK this typically takes about 35 to 40 days from when the mission acknowledges your application, even though the portal quotes a shorter nominal window.
Which UK VFS Centre Handles Your OCI Transfer
Which Indian mission and VFS centre you use depends on where you live in the UK, whatever mission first issued your OCI. Three missions cover the UK: the High Commission in London, and the Consulates General in Birmingham and Edinburgh. VFS routes you by postcode, so in practice its centre finder picks your centre for you.
London, Birmingham or Edinburgh: Finding Your Jurisdiction
Your mission | Where you live |
|---|---|
Consulate General, Edinburgh | All of Scotland |
Consulate General, Birmingham | The Midlands and the North of England: the West Midlands (Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall), the Yorkshire counties, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Lancashire, Cheshire, Cumbria, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Warwickshire, Northampton, Durham, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Cleveland, Humberside, the Isle of Man, and Conwy in North Wales |
High Commission, London | The rest of England and Wales, and Northern Ireland |
VFS runs OCI centres in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow, so your nearest one is usually close to home.
If Your OCI Was Issued in India or Another Country
If you got your OCI while living in India, or in another country before you moved to the UK, you still apply as a UK resident through your UK mission and VFS centre. Your current UK address is what decides which office you use, whatever mission first issued your OCI. If the portal will not accept your application because your record sits with the issuing mission, contact your UK mission and they will tell you how to proceed.
When Your OCI Transfer Is Stuck or Rejected
Most updates go through without drama, but from what we've observed, two things trouble people the most:
a long silence after submitting, and
a rejected upload.
Both are fixable.
Contacting VFS or the High Commission
If weeks pass with no movement, the split is simple. VFS handles the paperwork, fees and biometrics; the mission decides the application. So chase VFS first about a payment, a biometric appointment or a document query, and chase the High Commission or Consulate about the application itself once it has been acknowledged.
If it is genuinely stuck, you can escalate through the government's own grievance routes: MADAD, the Ministry of External Affairs' consular portal, and CPGRAMS. Quote your reference number when you do.
If the Portal Won't Accept Your Passport or Photo
Most rejections come down to a photo or scan that does not meet the portal's specifications. Use a photo taken within the last 30 days, and match the file size and format the portal asks for. If you see a 'record not found' message, check that the details you entered match your OCI exactly before you contact the helpdesk.
After the Transfer: Update Your Bank and Demat KYC Too
One step people forget: once your OCI shows your new passport, update the new passport on your Indian bank and demat records as well. Your passport is a KYC document, so if it is out of date on your investment accounts it can hold up a transaction or a re-KYC down the line.
If you invest in India through a Zerodha NRI demat account, this is worth doing promptly. We are Zerodha's official NRI onboarding partner, and we open NRI and OCI demat accounts from your phone, so whether you need to refresh your KYC with the new passport or open an account from scratch, we can notarise the documents and handle the onboarding for you.
OCI Transfer to a New British Passport: Questions UK OCI Holders Ask
Does My OCI Expire If I Don't Update It?
No. Your OCI is lifelong and does not expire. What goes out of date is the passport number linked to it, which is why a new passport needs an update, while the OCI itself stays valid.
Do I Need to Update My OCI if Only My Address Has Changed?
No. A change of address or occupation does not need a change to your OCI. The update is for a new passport or a correction to your personal details, so a house move on its own does not call for it.
I've Renewed My Passport Several Times Since Getting My OCI. Do I Update for Each One?
You only need your current passport linked. Run a single passport particulars update now with your latest passport and you are up to date, so you do not have to work back through every passport in between.
My Child's British Passport Was Renewed. Do I Update Their OCI?
Yes, the same passport particulars update applies to children. The one-time biometric step only comes in when a new passport is issued after the holder turns 20, so for a young child it is the straightforward online update with no biometric visit.
Can I Start the Update Before My New Passport Arrives?
No. You need the new passport in hand, because you upload its photo page and enter its number and issue date. As soon as it arrives, start the update, since the free three-month window counts from its issue date.
