Best NRI Account in India for UAE Residents: SBI vs HDFC vs ICICI vs Axis (2026)

If you live in the UAE and want to open an NRI account in India, the right bank depends on how you plan to use it. You might want to transfer your UAE salary to India, manage rent and other Indian income, make UPI payments from your UAE mobile number, or invest in Indian stocks.

SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank offer NRE and NRO accounts, but their minimum balance requirements, digital banking features and investment facilities differ. The best choice is the one that fits your needs without making everyday banking from the UAE unnecessarily complicated.

This guide compares all four banks on interest rates, minimum balances, UPI access, money transfers and Demat account facilities, so you can decide which account makes the most sense for you.

SBI vs HDFC vs ICICI vs Axis: NRE account comparison for UAE residents

The difference in savings interest rates is relatively small on modest balances. At 2.50% versus 2.75%, the gap is about ₹1,250 a year on ₹5 lakh and ₹5,000 on ₹20 lakh, assuming the balance stays unchanged for a full year.

If you're keeping a substantial sum in India for a year or longer, compare fixed deposit rates too. An FD may offer a better return than a savings account, depending on the tenure and applicable rate. Premium banking tiers, such as HDFC Bank Elite and Axis Bank Burgundy, may also offer relationship managers and fee waivers, but generally require higher balances.

SBI, HDFC, ICICI or Axis: Which bank is right for you?

SBI NRI account: lowest minimum balance

SBI asks for the smallest balance of the four. Its NRI fee schedule sets a monthly average balance of ₹3,000 for NRE and NRO savings accounts at metro and urban branches, ₹2,000 at semi-urban branches and ₹1,000 at rural ones. If your balance drops below that, the charge is between ₹10 and ₹15 a month plus GST, depending on how far short you are. That's small enough that an account you only top up now and then costs very little to keep open.

SBI is also well connected in the UAE. It works with 18 exchange houses and banks there, including Al Ansari Exchange, Lulu International Exchange, Al Fardan Exchange, Emirates NBD and Mashreq, and money sent through them reaches your SBI account almost immediately. SBI's fee schedule also lists outward SWIFT transfers from an NRE account as free, which helps if you ever need to move money back out of India.

You can apply from the UAE through SBI's YONO app. After you apply, you have 30 days to either visit an SBI branch in India with your original documents or courier notarised copies to SBI's Global NRI Centre in Ernakulam.

The main drawback is investing. Zerodha doesn't link SBI accounts through the NRE-PIS route, so if you want to buy Indian shares through Zerodha with money from your NRE account, you'll need an account with another bank. Support for UPI on international mobile numbers isn't clearly published for SBI either, so check with the bank if paying by UPI from your UAE number matters to you.

Best for: NRIs who mainly send money home from the UAE and want low balance requirements.

HDFC Bank NRI account: ₹10,000 minimum balance or a ₹1 lakh FD

HDFC Bank asks for a monthly average balance of ₹10,000 if your account is held at a metro or urban branch. The requirement drops to ₹5,000 at semi-urban branches and to a quarterly average of ₹2,500 at rural branches. If you'd rather not keep an eye on your savings balance, you can link a fixed deposit instead: ₹1 lakh for a metro or urban account, kept for at least a year and a day.

If your balance falls short, HDFC Bank charges 6% of the shortfall, up to ₹600 a month. The bank tells you about this only once, in the first month, and keeps charging after that until your balance is back up, so it's worth setting a reminder (HDFC Bank terms). The savings rate is 2.50%.

HDFC Bank supports UPI on UAE mobile numbers and can be linked to Zerodha for investing. For sending money home, it runs RemitNow2India with Lulu Exchange, which lets you send money from the UAE through HDFC Bank's app.

You may have read that HDFC Bank's branch in Dubai's DIFC was barred from taking new clients in September 2025. That restriction applies only to the DIFC branch. Your NRE or NRO account is opened with HDFC Bank in India and isn't affected.

To open an account from the UAE, you fill in HDFC Bank's online application and then courier the signed forms along with copies of your passport, UAE visa and address proof. The forms need your handwritten signature. As a new customer, your copies have to be certified by the Indian Embassy or Consulate, a magistrate, an official at an overseas branch of an Indian bank, or a digital notary. HDFC Bank doesn't accept overseas bank statements or tenancy contracts as address proof, so use a utility bill or a similar document.

Best for: NRIs who want UPI or Zerodha investing, especially if they already keep a fixed deposit.

ICICI Bank NRI account: ₹15,000 minimum balance

ICICI Bank's NRI savings account needs the highest balance of the four, a monthly average of ₹15,000. If you fall short, the charge is 6% of the shortfall, capped at ₹500 a month, which is the lowest cap among the three private banks. The savings rate is 2.50%.

ICICI Bank supports UPI on UAE mobile numbers and can be linked to Zerodha for investing. Its Money2India service for the UAE is open only to ICICI Bank NRI account holders. You book the transfer online, pay for it from your UAE bank account, and pay a flat AED 12 per transfer. Most transfers arrive the same day or the next day, and you can lock in the exchange rate when you book, for amounts up to ₹20 lakh.

To open an account from the UAE, you apply on ICICI Bank's website and a representative calls you back to help you complete the form. Copies of your passport, UAE visa, address proof and PAN card (or Form 60) need to be certified by a notary, a digital notary, the Indian Embassy or Consulate, or an official at an overseas branch of an Indian bank. Your first deposit has to come from an account already in your name.

Best for: NRIs who already bank with ICICI Bank, or who want UPI, Zerodha investing and a predictable way to send money from a UAE bank account.

Axis Bank NRI account: highest rate, ₹12,000 minimum balance

Axis Bank pays the highest savings rate of the four: 2.75% on balances below ₹50 lakh and 3.25% above, on both NRE and NRO savings.

Its minimum monthly average balance is ₹12,000 at metro and urban branches and ₹10,000 elsewhere. Axis Bank adds together the balances in all your savings and current accounts held under the same customer ID, leaving out PIS accounts. So if you keep both an NRE and an NRO account with Axis, their combined balance counts towards the requirement. If you fall short, the charge is 6% of the shortfall, up to ₹600 a month at metro and urban branches and ₹300 elsewhere.

Axis Bank supports UPI on UAE mobile numbers and can be linked to Zerodha for investing. One cost to note: sending money abroad by wire transfer costs ₹1,000 plus tax each time (Axis Bank charges), so it's less suited to people who move money out of India often.

To open an account from the UAE, you apply online and send the account opening form with copies of your passport, UAE visa and address proof, your PAN card (which Axis Bank requires) and a FATCA declaration. Axis Bank accepts copies certified by a digital notary, the Indian Embassy, an overseas banker, a judge or magistrate, or an apostille.

Best for: NRIs who keep a larger balance in savings, or who want both an NRE and an NRO account with the same bank.

Which bank is best for your NRE account: salary transfers, UPI or investing

If you want to send your UAE salary home and keep it in an NRE account

SBI is the simplest option if you send money regularly and your balance goes up and down. Its minimum balance is the lowest of the four, the charge for falling short is small, and money sent through its UAE exchange house partners arrives almost immediately.

If you plan to keep a large amount sitting in savings, Axis Bank's 2.75% rate will earn you a little more. For money you won't need for a year or more, an NRE or FCNR fixed deposit is usually a better home than either savings account.

If you want to pay Indian bills or use UPI from the UAE

HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank all support UPI on a UAE mobile number, so you can pay bills, shops and family members in India without keeping an Indian SIM. Choose between them based on the balance you're comfortable keeping. HDFC Bank works well if you already have, or plan to open, a ₹1 lakh fixed deposit. Axis Bank suits you if you'll hold both an NRE and an NRO account, since it combines their balances. ICICI Bank is fine if keeping ₹15,000 in the account isn't a problem.

One thing to know before you rely on UPI: payments from an NRI account can go to regular Indian bank accounts, shops and billers, but not into another NRE or NRO account. Our guide to UPI for NRIs explains how it works in more detail.

If you want to invest in Indian shares

Choose HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank or Axis Bank. To buy Indian shares with money from your NRE account, the account has to be enabled for the Portfolio Investment Scheme (PIS) and linked to your trading account. Zerodha links PIS accounts from HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, IDFC First Bank, IndusInd Bank and Yes Bank. SBI isn't one of them.

We're Zerodha's official NRI onboarding partner. We can open your Zerodha NRI demat account with your HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank or IDFC First Bank account, and you can do the whole process from your phone.

If you need more than one of these

You can hold NRE accounts with more than one bank. For example, you could keep an SBI account for receiving money from the UAE and an HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank or Axis Bank account for UPI payments and investing.

Before you apply: documents and Indian bank offices in the UAE

Indian bank representative offices in Dubai can't open your account

You'll see SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank offices in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, but you can't open an NRE or NRO account there. Most Indian banks in the UAE are set up as representative offices, and UAE Central Bank rules allow them to promote the bank and give advice, but not to accept deposits or open accounts.

Until recently, these offices could at least help you with your forms and check your documents before they were sent to India. In mid-2026, the UAE Central Bank stopped representative offices from offering this kind of documentation support. SBI and ICICI Bank also have branches in Dubai's DIFC, but these serve specific groups of clients. In practice, your account is opened by the bank in India, and you deal with it directly.

Getting your documents notarized

Applying online doesn’t mean the paperwork is entirely digital. You’ll still need to send signed forms and certified copies of your passport, visa and address proof by courier. Your first deposit must also come from abroad or from an account in your name.

Why? Indian banks generally restrict video KYC from outside India. A Finance Ministry official confirmed this in July 2026.

All four banks accept documents certified by the Indian Embassy or Consulate. HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank also accept digital notarisation, which you can complete over a video call on your phone without booking a consulate appointment.

Our digital notarisation service is designed for Indian bank requirements. For the exact requirements of each bank, see our NRE/NRO document checklist. If you’re ready to apply, our guide to opening an NRI account in the UAE walks you through each step and how long it takes.

What to check with the bank before you apply

  • Which branch your account will sit with. HDFC Bank and Axis Bank set the minimum balance by branch type, so the same account can need a different balance at a metro branch and a rural one.

  • UPI on your UAE number. If you're considering SBI and want to pay by UPI, ask whether it supports UPI on a +971 number for NRE accounts.

  • Linking to your broker. If you plan to invest, check that your broker can link the bank's PIS account. For Zerodha, that's HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, IDFC First Bank, IndusInd Bank or Yes Bank.

  • Whether you need an NRE or an NRO account. Money you earn in the UAE goes into an NRE account, while income you earn in India, such as rent, goes into an NRO account. Our NRE vs NRO guide explains the difference, including how each is taxed.

Best NRI account in India: questions UAE residents ask

Can my family in India deposit money into my NRE account?

No. An NRE account can only receive money that is allowed to be sent back abroad, such as money you transfer from the UAE or move from another NRE or FCNR account. If your parents or relatives in India want to give you money, it should go into your NRO account. An NRO account can also be held jointly with a family member who lives in India.

Can I add my NRE account to Google Pay?

Only if the app lets you sign up with your UAE mobile number. UPI for NRI accounts works through apps that accept international numbers, such as BHIM, PhonePe and your bank's own app. Your bank also has to register your UAE number against the account before you can set it up.

Do I pay tax in the UAE on my NRE interest?

No. The UAE doesn't charge personal income tax, and interest on an NRE account is tax-free in India for as long as you're an NRI. Interest on an NRO account is taxed in India, and the bank deducts the tax before paying it to you.

What happens to my NRI account if I leave the UAE?

If you move to another country, your account stays as it is. Update your overseas address and mobile number with the bank so that you keep receiving OTPs. If you move back to India, you'll need to convert the account to a resident account. Our guide to NRE account rules after returning to India explains the timeline and steps.
